Physical Eduation

Intent

At St John Henry Newman, the intent of our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is to provide all pupils with a well-rounded and inclusive program that promotes the development of essential physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. Our intention is to inspire a lifelong love for physical activity, equip pupils with necessary knowledge of healthy lifestyles, and foster a positive attitude towards physical well-being. We believe that PE plays a crucial role in promoting active lifestyles, promoting teamwork and resilience, and enhancing pupils' overall well-being.

Implementation

Curriculum Design and Planning

Our PE curriculum is carefully designed to ensure all pupils have access to a broad and balanced range of physical activities, covering the key areas of movement, games, gymnastics, dance, and athletics. Our planning incorporates the national curriculum requirements while providing flexibility to meet the needs and interests of all pupils. It also designed to fit within the local sporting events to ensure all children have a chance to complete in various sporting competitions.

Inclusive Provision

We are committed to promoting inclusivity and ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their abilities or background, can fully participate and achieve in PE. Differentiation and adaptations are made to cater to a diverse range of needs, ensuring equal opportunities for all. Additional support and resources are provided for pupils with special educational needs or disabilities, ensuring they are fully included and able to thrive.

Quality Teaching and Learning

Our outstanding PE provision is underpinned by high-quality teaching and learning. Our teachers possess the necessary expertise and qualifications to deliver engaging and effective PE lessons. They continually promote a positive and supportive learning environment, fostering pupils' self-confidence and motivation to participate. Scaffolded learning experiences are employed to enable pupils to build upon prior knowledge and skills progressively.

Opportunities for Participation

We provide regular and varied opportunities for all pupils to actively participate in PE. This includes structured lessons, extracurricular activities, and inter-school competitions. We have a comprehensive range of free after school clubs provided by the school which include physical and sporting activities. Our school also collaborates with community sports clubs and organizations to offer pupils additional out-of-school opportunities, promoting lifelong participation in physical activities.

Health and Safety

We prioritise the health and safety of our pupils during all PE activities. Thorough risk assessments are conducted and regularly reviewed to provide a safe environment for physical activities. Our staff receive relevant training in first aid, ensuring prompt and effective response to any potential injuries or emergencies.

Assessment and Feedback

Regular formative assessment methods are used to monitor and track pupils' progress in PE. Assessment focuses on both skill development and the application of knowledge. Feedback is provided to pupils, highlighting areas of strength and areas for improvement. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and set targets for further development.

Impact

Improved Physical Literacy

Through our outstanding PE provision, we aim to develop pupils' physical literacy, enabling them to move with confidence, competence, and creativity in a wide range of physical activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to refine their fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, and balance. Pupils will leave our school with a solid foundation of physical skills, empowering them to engage in lifelong physical activity.

Enhanced Health and Well-being

Our intention is to instil a positive attitude towards physical well-being and healthy lifestyles. By engaging in regular physical activity, pupils develop an understanding of the importance of exercise, healthy eating, and mental well-being. Pupils are equipped with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices about leading a healthy lifestyle, leading to improved overall well-being.

Personal and Social Development

The impact of our outstanding PE provision extends beyond physical development. Through participation in team and individual activities, pupils develop crucial personal and social skills, including communication, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and fair play. These skills transfer to other areas of their school life, positively impacting their academic progress and social relationships.

Inclusion and Well-being for All

Our commitment to inclusivity ensures that all pupils, regardless of their abilities or background, are actively included and supported in PE. By fostering an inclusive environment where differences are celebrated, we promote positive mental health and a sense of belonging amongst all pupils. We create opportunities for pupils to appreciate and embrace diversity, fostering an inclusive society both within and beyond the school.

Successful Transitions

Our outstanding PE provision aids pupils in making successful transitions to secondary school and beyond. Pupils leaving our school will have the necessary physical skills, knowledge, and motivation to continue their engagement in physical activities. The foundations built during their primary years will equip them with the confidence and resilience required to thrive in secondary school PE and beyond.

By implementing this intent for PE in our primary school, we aim to provide an outstanding experience that empowers our pupils to lead active and healthy lives, develop essential life skills, and contribute positively to society.
